The Battery Tender® Power Tender® 4 Amp is designed for faster, everyday charging of automotive, marine, and powersports batteries where the 1.25 Amp Plus output is too slow for regular use. At 4 Amp, it restores a depleted 60Ah car battery in approximately 8 hours versus 32+ hours on a 1.25 Amp charger — making it practical for weekly or daily charging cycles, not just seasonal storage. It also adds 6V/12V voltage switching and Lithium compatibility, covering virtually every battery chemistry and voltage configuration in your garage. Like all Battery Tender® chargers it includes full ISM float maintenance for indefinite connected storage once charged.
In 12V mode: cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, boats, RVs, lawnmowers, and personal watercraft. In 6V mode: pre-1956 American automobiles, vintage motorcycles, and any equipment with a 6-volt system. Compatible battery chemistries: flooded lead-acid, AGM, GEL cell, sealed maintenance-free, and Lithium. The 4 Amp output is appropriately sized for 12V batteries from 20Ah to 200Ah and 6V batteries in the same range.
Use the voltage selector switch on the unit before connecting to your battery — 6V position for six-volt systems, 12V for modern vehicles. Always confirm the correct setting before connecting. The charger delivers a fundamentally different charge voltage profile for each setting; incorrect mode selection will either undercharge a 12V battery or overcharge a 6V one. Once correctly set, the ISM algorithm handles initialization, bulk charge, absorption, and float maintenance automatically.
Connect and Forget means once connected, the 4 Amp Power Tender® manages the entire charge cycle automatically with no manual intervention. It charges at full 4 Amp output until the battery is full, then drops to float maintenance mode indefinitely. If the battery voltage drops under load — from a parasitic draw or partial discharge — ISM adaptive charging detects the drop and automatically resumes full 4 Amp output to restore charge, then returns to float. You never need to monitor it, adjust settings, or reconnect. The IP65 rating supports permanent mounted installation in exposed environments.
Yes — the ISM float maintenance mode is safe for indefinite connection on all supported battery chemistries including lithium. Once full, the charger delivers only the micro-current needed to offset self-discharge with no overcharge risk. The IP65 rating allows year-round connection in damp garages and covered outdoor storage. Many users keep it permanently connected during off-season storage of boats, RVs, and seasonal powersports vehicles.
ISM (Infinite Sequential Monitoring™) continuously monitors battery voltage and adapts output through four stages: Initialization (battery health check and recovery pulse for deeply discharged batteries), Bulk Charge (full 4 Amp output), Absorption (reduced current to complete the charge safely), and Float Maintenance (micro-current triggered by voltage drop). The adaptive element is key for vehicles with active parasitic loads — modern cars, boats with bilge pumps and electronics, and RVs — where voltage can drop during storage. ISM detects these drops automatically and restores charge without any manual input.
The 4 Amp Power Tender® uses two LEDs to communicate charge status: Solid red = bulk charging in progress. Solid green = fully charged, float maintenance mode active. If no LEDs illuminate after connection, check your connections and confirm the battery is not too deeply discharged to accept charge. Flashing or alternating LEDs indicate a fault condition — verify polarity (red to positive, black to negative) and chemistry switch position before reconnecting.
Yes — Battery Tender® chargers include automatic temperature compensation, which continuously adjusts charge voltage based on ambient temperature. In extreme heat, the charger automatically reduces voltage to prevent overcharging; in extreme cold, it increases voltage to ensure the battery receives a complete, proper charge. This is particularly important for vehicles stored in unheated garages, outdoor sheds, or regions with significant seasonal temperature swings — conditions where a fixed-voltage charger will consistently undercharge in winter and risk overcharging in summer.
