Level 1 uses a standard 120V household outlet — the Battery Tender® eCharge 16 Amp adds approximately 4 to 5 miles of range per hour, ideal for plug-in hybrids and short daily commutes. Level 2 uses a dedicated 240V circuit for significantly faster charging: the eCharge 32 Amp adds 20 to 25 miles per hour, the 40 Amp adds up to 30 miles per hour, and the 48 Amp adds up to 35 miles per hour — enough to fully charge most EVs overnight from any state of charge.
Mount the eCharge on the wall near your parking spot, have a licensed electrician install a NEMA 14-50 or NEMA 6-50 outlet and dedicated 240V circuit, plug in, and you are done. Most electrician installations take 1 to 2 hours. The Battery Tender® eCharge is Energy Star certified, qualifying for the federal EV charger tax credit of up to $1,000 under the Inflation Reduction Act.
Battery Tender® eCharge chargers use the J1772 connector — the North American standard supported by all non-Tesla EVs and plug-in hybrids. For Tesla vehicles, use the included J1772 to Tesla adapter. The eCharge 32 Amp Level 1+2 is the most versatile model — compatible with both 120V and 240V power sources for use at home or anywhere a 240V outlet is available.

Yes — every EV relies on a conventional 12V battery to power computers, door locks, lights, and control systems. If the 12V auxiliary battery fails, the EV cannot operate even with a full main battery. A Battery Tender® Plus or Junior charger and maintainer connected to the 12V battery during extended parking or storage prevents the sulfation that leads to 12V battery failure in EVs.
